An acute crisis can be a highly distressing experience, and at Hälsa Mind Medical, we understand the urgency of providing immediate care and effective treatment to help individuals in crisis. Whether due to severe anxiety, panic attacks, depressive episodes, or other mental health challenges, our team is here to offer prompt support and intervention.
Screening for Acute Crisis
The first step in managing an acute crisis is through screening. This initial process helps us to understand the nature of the crisis and assess the level of urgency.
If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, you can self-refer, or your GP may refer you to us. Screening includes a brief questionnaire to determine the severity of your symptoms and whether immediate psychiatric intervention is necessary.
If we feel that your situation requires more urgent care or a different level of service, we will signpost you to the appropriate emergency or crisis service.
If you or someone at risk of causing harm to themselves or others, they are likely to require emergency service. We do not offer emergency service at Halsa Mind Medical.
Assessment Process
After the screening process, you will be seen by one of our psychiatrists for a thorough assessment.
o This includes a detailed evaluation of your symptoms, mental health history, and any contributing factors.
o The assessment aims to establish whether your symptoms are related to a specific mental health condition (such as severe depression, acute anxiety, or psychosis) or if there are other underlying causes.
Treatment for Acute Crisis
Based on the assessment, the psychiatrist will formulate a personalised treatment plan designed to address the immediate needs of the crisis while also considering long-term management strategies. Treatment may include:
o Medication: Medications such as antidepressants, antianxiety medications, or mood stabilisers may be prescribed to stabilise symptoms
o Supportive Services: We may signpost to NHS, Citizen Advice Bureau or other services that support people in crisis
Ongoing Support and Follow-Up
After the initial crisis has been managed, ongoing support is essential to prevent further crises and manage underlying conditions. Our psychiatrists may recommend continued psychological therapy, medication adjustments, or supportive therapies such as occupational therapy or CBT.
